Proposed Law for Harsher Penalties on Delayed Recalls

With all the news lately about factory recalls, Senator Claire McCaskill has introduced a bill that calls for much stiffer penalties for auto executives and automobile companies that delay recalls. In some cases, failure to immediately recall a defect that results in a death will garner a penalty of life in prison.

The fine for auto companies delaying recalls would no longer be capped at a maximum of $35 million. Instead the potential fine would be raised from $5,000 to $25,000 for every vehicle involved in a delayed recall.
